Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful….

27 02 2008

After 21 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and a movie. She said I love you but I know this other woman loves you and would love to spend some time with you.

The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my MOTHER, who has been a widow for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally.

That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie.

“What’s wrong, are you well,” she asked?

“I thought that it would be pleasant to be with you,” I responded. “Just the two of us!”

She thought about it for a moment, and then said, “I would like that very much.”

That Friday after work, as I drove over to pick her up I was a bit nervous. When I arrived at her house, I noticed that she, too, seemed to be nervous about our date. She waited in the door with her coat on. She had curled her hair and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary.

She smiled from a face that was as radiant as an angel’s.

“I told my friends that I was going to go out with my son, and they were impressed, “she said, as she got into the car. They can’t wait to hear about our meeting”. We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and cozy. My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down, I had to read the menu. Half way through the entries, I lifted my
eyes and saw Mom sitting there staring at me. A nostalgic smile was on her lips “It was I who used to have to read the menu when you were small,” she said.

“Then it’s time that you relax and let me return the favor,” I responded.

During the dinner, we had an agreeable conversation - nothing extraordinary, but catching up on recent events of each other’s life. We talked so much that we missed the movie.

As we arrived at her house later, she said, “I’ll go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you.” I agreed.

“How was your dinner date?” asked my wife when I got home. “Very nice. Much more so than I could have imagined,” I answered.

A few days later, my mother died. It happened so suddenly that I did not get to do anything for her.

Some time later, I received an envelope with a copy of a restaurant receipt from the same place where mother and I had dined.

An attached note said: “I paid this bill in advance. I wasn’t sure that I could be there; but nevertheless, I paid for two plates - one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant for me. I love you, son.”

At that moment, I understood the importance of saying in time: “I LOVE YOU!” and to give our loved ones the time that they deserve. Nothing in life is more important than your family.

Aaja Nachle!

27 02 2008

Well, I thought I missed watching Madhuri on the big screen, but I don’t regret anymore! I guess the director had lost it half way, what was the purpose of the movie, why was it made? There was dance, there was Madhuri, some latle & dumkhe, and that is it!

This lady wanted to revive ‘Ájanta’ from being abolished. The state government had originally planned for a mall in the place of this dilapidated place which was once famous for art & dance.

She takes up panga with the city Mayor to do a cultural show and comes to an agreement that if a majority of the city turn ups for the show, the place will continue to be center for art & culture.

If the director was so keen on portraying art & culture, I must say he missed out on soooooooooooo many things. To mention a couple of them –

  1. Diya (Madhuri Dixit) comes all the way from NY, performs in one show and conveniently changes the state government’s decision and leaves her home town without any second thoughts! If she had just come to perform, the drama in the 1st half was definitely not worth it. I’m not sure if one show can change the destiny of a city? There is a flaw in logic here to revive the dying culture.
  2. She comes to meet her guruji but does not make a single attempt to contact her parents! (She actually elopes to the US with a firangi while her engagement was planned with some local guy there). Another flaw.

The script hasn’t done justice to any of the actors in the film. Konkona Sen’s performance was definitely not comparable with her previous work, while Kunal is underutilized. No matter how much you try and tell yourself that it is just a movie, meant only for entertainment, the movie is way too boring and annoying (That’s right, annoying).

The glamour queen returns to Bollywood after 6 years but mazaa nahi aaya Madhuri!

You said it!

I want to marry Akbar!

18 02 2008

This article is direct dil se… My latest crush is Akbar! Hey, I’m not kidding…Yes people – I did watch Jodhaa Akbar (1st day, night showJ). In case you have any confusions, let me tell you, I don’t want to marry Hrithik Roshan (I’m very clear on that, though he looked superb, sexy and hot in the ‘Shehenshah’’s role). I want marry Akbar, if he really had such great virtues.

Movie review – Well, this movie is a blend of reality, facts and myth but I still liked the movie. I would rate it 4/5. Ending was obvious and predictable. I don’t think any other actor in Bollywood would fit in Akbar’s role better. Best part of the movie was of course the romance! Wow! The actors shared such good chemistry on the screen that they actually seemed to be in love with each other. Beautiful Cinematography. Brilliant music, I’m still humming ‘Nagmein he nagmein hai…’, A.R. Rehman at his best.

Personally – It was more than a movie for a movie. I loved their onscreen romance. Don’t know how true the events were, but they seemed real and believable. In fact, one of the reviews says, Jodhaa was Jahangir’s wife and not Akbar’s! (That’s grosssssss). I also heard Akbar was most influenced by a brahmin lady who molded his decisions. Besides, did women have the liberty to question men or make decisions in that era? That’s subject to doubt.

I would not like to reveal the story, go watch it, at least for the Mughal grandeur, colorful sets & beautiful people. I’m totally in love with Akbar. Akbar’s character, his charisma, his strength, power and his love for Jodhaa! (My mom is wondering where on earth she would find Akbar for me in this era!).

If Akbar, the greatest of the entire Mughal dynasty was so tolerant and respected women & humanity to this great extent in that era, why can’t an ordinary man today do that? Even today, Hindus & Muslims want to see each other’s blood. The loss of life and property which Hindus and Muslims face because of their different religions is horrific. And why should BJP and other political parties go on bandh if a Hindu marries a Muslim? Why yaar! Somebody stop them!

I guess this article has taken a totally different direction.  Anyway, I still want to marry Akbar!

Men VS Women

15 02 2008

SILENT TREATMENT
A man and his wife were having some problems at home and were giving each other the silent treatment. Suddenly, the man realized that the next day, he would need his wife to wake him at 5:00 AM for an early morning business flight.
Not wanting to be the first to break the silence (and LOSE), he wrote on a piece of paper, “Please wake me at 5:00 AM ” He left it where he knew she would find it. The next morning, the man woke up, only to discover it was 9:00 AM and he
had missed his flight. Furious, he was about to go and see why his wife hadn’t wakened him, when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed. The paper said, “It is 5:00 AM. Wake up.” Men are not equipped for these kinds of contests.

WIFE VS. HUSBAND
A couple drove down a country road for several miles, not saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an argument and neither of them wanted to concede their position. As they passed a barnyard of mules, goats, and pigs, the husband asked
sarcastically, “Relatives of yours?” “Yep,” the wife replied , “in-laws

WOMEN’S REVENGE
“Cash, check or charge?” I asked, after folding items the woman wished to purchase. As she fumbled for her wallet I noticed a remote control for a television set in her purse. “So, do you always carry your TV remote?” I asked. “No,” she replied, “but my husband refused to come shopping with me, and I figured this was the most evil thing I could do to him legally.”

UNDERSTANDING WOMEN
(A MAN’S PERSPECTIVE) I know I’m not going to understand women. I’ll never understand how you can take boiling hot wax,
pour it onto your upper thigh, rip the hair out by the root, and still be afraid of a spider.

WORDS
A husband read an article to his wife about how many words women use a day… 30,000 to a man’s 15,000.
The wife replied, “The reason has to be because we have to repeat everything to men…  The husband then turned to his wife and asked, “What?”

CREATION
A man said to his wife one day, “I don’t know how you can be so stupid and so beautiful all at the same time.”
The wife responded, “Allow me to explain. God made me beautiful so you would be attracted to me; God made me stupid so I would be attracted to you!

Unconventional careers

15 02 2008

Every time I watch animal planet and other non-soap channels, I see guys who go diving into the oceans in search of ships or some rare fish! This is their career. Well, my question to you is, can a kid in India confidently dream of diving into deep seas in search of decayed ships rather than taking up the IIT entrance test or CA foundation course!

For example – Siddharth Narayanan, the Karan Singhania of Rang De Basanti has completed his MBA from S.P Jain Institute of Management & Research, Mumbai. He was in fact, declared the “CNBC MANAGER OF THE YEAR” in 1999.

In spite of that, this guy chose film making to a career in corporate world! He actually quit his job to join Mani Ratnam as an assistant director for the movie Kannathil Muthamittal (Tamil movie) for a meager salary of Rs.3, 000!

In one of his interviews he said – “Cinema has always been my life. In fact, after class-10, I went up to my dad and said, enough of studies, Appa (Dad). Let me do something in cinema. But my father was smart enough to get me educated this far. So, MBA or not, I am in the industry I dreamed of being in.”

Reality is – Not many of us would want to choose movies or similar careers unless we have something concrete in place nor would we quit a job that actually won you great accolades like, CNBC manager of the year! It’s all about how badly do you want it? Hence, i guess there is only one Shah Rukh Khan/Tom Cruise but over a lac computer engineers. After all, at the end of the day, everybody wants to play safe!

This blog is continuation of my previous post, “Do you know what you want in life?” Not many of us would dare to become what we dream! I’m not being pessimist, but the reality is, being unconventional is taking risk, risking the biggest things of our lives, career and money!

I’m facing it myself! In a juxtaposition of choosing the corporate world to my passion ! Well, I don’t know. I would love to follow my heart than follow my mind which keeps reminding me of money & career…But…

My day - TOMORROW

cupcake.jpgbday.jpg

Did I tell you that tomorrow is my B’Day? Yahoo JJ

Might sound funny, but I actually wait for this day every year, 12th of February. I feel soooo proud on my b’day…hehe. Don’t ask me why, I don’t know myself! It’s been a track record, every birthday somebody makes me cry..Errrrr.. This time I want break this jinx

Nothing special happening. I don’t think I’ll even have the time to go for dinner. It’s going to be work and work. That’s the order of the day…But I’m hoping for some good eggless cake being ordered for me, like how it happens to every other employee here. In any case, as long I get to eat good food, I don’t complaint. After all, I live to eat and not eat to live!

cupcake.jpg

Hence forth I plan to have a theme for every b’day. This time it’s going to be a food carnival. I’m going to have as much junk as possible (“Death by Chocolate” ice-cream, Fried Ice-Cream, Corn Kernel Popcorn, Domino’s Garlic Bread, Eden’s Chef’s Baked Pasta, China Town’s Sizziling Chocolate Brownie, Capsicum & Paneer Sizzler, Lays Sweet N Sour Chips, Pani Puri Chat, Crackle Chocolate, to name a FEW!)

Did I hear someone say, is that enough (Peet hai ki kuaan?)? Hey, but this is the real me ;-)

As understood, my work is keeping me way too busy to write a post, so I thought I would post some funny forward mail junk on the website to entertain all of you! I’m waiting to write on 4 different weddings that I had attended in the last 4 weeks! So, hold on!

Till then, this is Vaishno signing off, good night, shubh raatri, shabakher and please please please take good care of yourself! (To be read in Amitabh Bachan’s style, especially when he used to end KBC-1)
